Why does my partner overthink everything at night?

You are not agreeing the worry is true; you are letting the feeling be seen, which is what actually lowers the alarm.
The second is closeness without words. Researchers describe "somatic co-regulation" — calm, rhythmic, physically near contact, like holding hands or slow breathing together — as the response that most reliably brings a ruminating partner's arousal down. Under what is called Social Baseline Theory, a steady partner nearby literally lowers the effort the brain has to spend to feel safe. The job is not to quiet the thought; it is to quiet the nervous system, and let the thought lose its grip on its own.
And there is a quieter, daytime tool that works because it respects how the night brain operates. Couples can agree on a fixed, earlier "worry time" — a standing point the next day to look at the fear together. It gives the mind permission to set the thought down, knowing it has somewhere safe to go. Paired with a simple, spoken agreement to defer big relationship questions until morning — when the reasoning centre is back online — it turns the night from a courtroom back into a place to rest.
