Why does my partner skip social plans?

Is it something I did?

Almost always, no — and naming that early matters, because a cancelled plan can land like a rejection when it isn't one.

When your partner backs out, the easy story is "they don't care about my needs," "they aren't trying," or "they're avoiding the relationship." The research points somewhere quieter and more physical.

For some people, a group event isn't a neutral backdrop — it's a dense, high-resolution flood of data. Where does it come from?

The exhaustion is not laziness, and it isn't only "in their head." It has a physical chain behind it. A sensitive or more inward-oriented brain runs closer to its limit to begin with, processes social input more deeply, and then has to manage all of that vigilance in real time. Why doesn't this just resolve over time?

What actually helps

The instinct is to push harder — to insist, to guilt, to drag them out "for their own good." The research is clear that pushing tends to backfire.

The avoidant partner reads pressure as coercion and a threat to their autonomy, and pulls further in. What lowers the stakes is the opposite of force. When you are a calm, steady presence rather than a source of judgment, your partner's brain is far less likely to read a social setting as danger. The research calls this being a prepared safety stimulus — your steadiness becomes the thing that makes the room survivable.

A few things shown to help in practice. Make the event predictable. Anxiety feeds on the unknown, so "predict, plan, prepare" lowers the cost: agree in advance who will be there, how long you'll stay, and a clear, no-shame exit if it gets to be too much. Agency is the medicine — knowing they can leave often makes staying possible.

Stop being the shield without becoming the drill sergeant. The goal isn't to handle every interaction for them, and it isn't to abandon them at the door — it's to move, slowly, from "anxiety manager" to teammate. Crucially, don't grade the performance afterward. Critical feedback after an event raises the stakes for the next one; warmth lowers them.

Protect your own world, openly. A shrinking social life breeds the quiet resentment that turns into the secondary fight.
